Wow. Man, time flies this time of year. I have now been at my new job for over a month and a half.
Well, the new job is great. I haven't really come across anyone I dislike. The people are pretty cool, and I am learning a ton. The company uses a lot of Active Directory managment, Citrix, and Altiris. I haven't really messed with AD too much before this, and hadn't used Citrix or Alritis at all. They keep me fairly busy, but not the "so busy you can't think straight" kind of busy. There is also a ton of space to move up in the company, whether in my own department (which is computer/software maintenance and repair) or going into networking or programming. I'm pretty happy with it.
Programming wise, I am actually doing a bit for work at the moment. It isn't part of my job technically, but I have offered to. I always like to see what I can do.
I am starting to really look into the language AutoIt. I really like some of it's abilities. It is flat out great for working with Windows API stuff.
Other then that, I have nearly all my Christmas shopping done. A few people are more difficult, but i'll figure stuff out.
I start my new job monday. I can't really say whether I am excited or not. I have had the same job for just shy of a year, and I really like it. I hope that the new one will be good as well. I will probably write about it a bit.
I also just published a tiny compiler command tool I have been messing with. It isn't very fancy, but it saves me some typing. You can read about it here.
Lastly, I am starting to scout parts for my next computer. It will effectively be Kain 3, since my existing one has gone under one major hardware revision since it was built. I am not looking to be in the super top end market, but something powerful that will last me awhile would be good. I am projecting a build in the Feb-Apr '09 area. It gives me time to get past the Christmas season and build up a bit more cash. Any suggestions here are welcome.
A few worthwhile things to report today:
For one thing, Tiff and Mike are home again. Which is really awesome. It will be nice to have someone to hopefully hang out with a bit more often. For those not in the know, one of my best friends is on a mission, and another one is, well, just incredibly busy, so I don't get much of a chance to hang with anyone anymore.
The second thing is...my place of work has decided to keep me on part-time past the holiday season. I can't really convey how psyched I am about that. I still really like working there, and it would have sucked to not be able to. (Not to mention, the submit applications/interview/wait process sucks.)
No real programming to report, nor network stuff.
Since Justin quite often sees this faster then my letters. Thanks for the gifts! Hope you enjoy yours.
I think my Christmas shopping is nearly done, not completely, but close. I've got 2 days off from work to (hopefully) do some programming. Lastly, my shoulder hurts...I have no idea why either. Time for yet another short run down. I'm not sure why it seems to come to this so much lately, but hey, it's a good way to get information across.
Programming:
My biggest project for now is pretty much KSP, because I want to get it working well so that I can make it portable and use it. Mcl-keys is effectively on hold until I can figure out my next move. To be specific, the current work on KSP is on the database back-ends. It uses SQLite for storage, and I have never worked with SQL, so it has been interesting.
Yo-yoing:
Sadly, I have been doing a bit less lately. I've just been busy. I have single lacerations down fairly well. I am getting very good at plastic whips as well. I think my next tasks will be iron whip and maybe Hidemasa Hook. MAYBE.
Network:
The network is working great, having been slightly altered. I think I am done with it until I get more stuff to add to it.
Website:
Not presently in the mood to write HTML or CGI. May have to update it for KSP if I can get it to a good usable status.
and lastly
Job:
It has been going well. I feel like I am not having to ask as many questions. This is most certainly not to say that I don't still ask a lot of them, but maybe less then a few weeks ago. I think I am getting a bit more proficient with our processes and tools too. I was only hired as seasonal, but I really like it here. I am thinking about talking to my boss(es) about staying on as a part-timer after the holidays.
Well, that's all for now. As always, if anyone out there has interest in the actual programming end of my hobbies, check out Kain Research.
I really am getting frustrated with my programming. The Monocle-Lens project I am working on is really proving to be quite a taxing experience. At this point I have literally spent hours looking at example code, and not really feeling like I have learned a dang thing from it. I will of course press on because I want to get it done (and someone is depending on it).
Anyhow, in other news, PoE2 is being laid off from his summer job (since it was seasonal), and we are going to try to both get a job at the same place. That would be pretty awesome for a number of reasons. Unfortunatly, I kinda limit the job field, since I need a desk job (I can't stand for extended periods of time). We'll see what we can do. Here's hoping we can pull it off.
For anyone that has attempted to visit either of my sites. They will likely be down for awhile. We are overhauling the home network, and with the quickly changing IP address assigns, I haven' t bothered to setup the port forwarding. If I get a job, I will likely just buy hosting, and then they will have *much* better uptime.
Cross your fingers people.
So, I still don't have a new job, but I am planning on going to a job fair in early october if nothing comes up before then. We'll see what happens. Ira has convinced me to try World of Warcraft. As a general rule I don't care for pay servers. I'm not enough of a gamer to want to pay. However, I have heard good things about WoW, so i'm going to give it a try, i'll have to be pretty dang impressed to go for it though.
P.S. Is Blizzard freaking crazy? The patch is 465 mb! Not that it is any big deal on a high speed connection, but the disc I am loading off said it was current as of july. What problem needed nearly half a gig of patches in just 2 months?
Unfortunatly, the job that I was pitched during the job interview was not the job I was assigned to. Basically, I was told at the interview that I would be either entering data, or correcting data. Either one of those would have been fine, since they are both computer work. Instead I was placed in a mail room sorting mail. I can't do that. I'm not trying to say that i'm too good for it or anything, frankly any job i'm capable of is fine with me. The problem is that that particular kind of work hurts my hands. I came home with my left hand hurting horribly, still does actually.
To add insult to injury, I started getting sick not 2 hours into the job. I decided not to eat lunch. By the time I got home I felt awful, and just went to bed. My stomach is much better today, but every joint in my body hurts.
I called work to call in sick, and while I was on the phone decided to speak with the manager to figure out why I was doing a job I never agreed to. He stated that due to some recent changes, everyone will be doing sorting most of the time. So while the job I had agreed to was available, it would not have been all I did. I informed them that I felt it wasn't the line of work for me, and thanked them for giving me a chance. It's a shame too, because all the bosses over there are awesome. I would love to have worked there.
Oh well, I guess it's back to the job hunt. I gotta find one too, because when I thought I would have a decent job, I bought a PSP. Yes, I know I shouldn't have bought it before having the job secured, but I did. Thankfully I still have some money from the last computer repair job i did, so i'll be fine. Well, I still feel like trash, so i'm going to go lay down...
Well, I was actually supposed to have heard from my future employer yesterday, but didn't. It got down to the time that I figured they would be closing, so I called them. Turns out that my background check (what I was waiting on) had come back (clear). No idea why I never got that call... Anyhow, I start tommorow. I'll post my shift data and such here when I know it.
When I was being interviewed, the interviewer (my future team leader if i'm not mistaken) gave me many chances to ask additional questions. I, of course, did not. In retrospect there are a lot of things I neglected to ask.
- What is my shift
- Is this full time or part time
- What is the dress code (I am thinking of regrowing the beard I shaved off for the interview)
- What is their stance on CCW permits
- Etc...
So yeah... I guess i'll find out :-)
Hey, I acutally have something to report on my first blog post. I went to a job interview today and I start tuesday
or wednesday.
I'm pretty psyched, since it's my first actual job. I'll basically be handling data entry and correction which is the
kind of stuff i'm good at anyway. Other then that though, there's not a heck of a lot going on. Hope to post in
here at least weekly, but we'll see if that ACTUALLY happens. :-)
